[01] President Clinton: Turkish side blamed for the deadlock
Primary responsibility for the deadlock in the Cyprus issue was placed on
the Turkish side, says President Clinton.
In his letter submitting a bimonthly report to the Speaker of the House of
Representatives and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs
on progress on the Cyprus question, the American President notes that
"unfortunately the Turkish side took the position that talks could not
begin unless certain preconditions were satisfied, including recognition of
the "TRNC" and withdrawal of Cyprus' application to the European Union".
Ambassador Holbrooke assured both sides that the USA would remain engaged
in the search for a solution, concludes President Clinton in his letter.
[02] Turkey responsible for violations of human rights in Cyprus
Turkey is held responsible for everything happening in the occupied part of
Cyprus and violations of human rights cannot be tolerated by international
laws and conventions, stated the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ioannis
Kasoulides.
The above is the conclusion one may draw from the decisions and resolutions
of the Council of Europe and the outcome of the recourses to the European
Court of Human Rights against Turkey. These decisions indicate that the
administration operating illegally in the occupied part of Cyprus is
subordinated to Turkey which is held responsible for human rights
violations, Mr Kasoulides said.
[03] Impressive mosaic floors uncovered at Courion
Excavations at the Early Christian Basilica at Courion led to the
uncovering of multicoloured mosaic floors with elaborate geometric
compositions. They were found in various parts of the three ailes of the
church and date back to the end of the fifth and beginning of the sixth
centuries A.D.
An exceptional specimen of an earlier mosaic floor came also to light, its
surface laying lower than the later floor.
