Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 98-07-03Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>News UpdateFriday, 03/07/98CONTENTS[01] Diego Cordovez begins contacts in CyprusDiego Cordovez, the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser, who arrived in Cyprus yesterday afternoon, had separate meetings with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, aimed at the resumption of intercommunal talks.Mr Cordovez declined to make any statements to the press after the meeting with President Clerides saying he would be giving a press conference on Saturday. On his part Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides said that the "talks are on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions" but refrained from disclosing anything about the content of the discussions. Mr. Cordovez will have further meetings with both sides today. [02] New UN envoy arrives in CyprusDame Ann Hercus, the New Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Chief of Mission of the UN operations in Cyprus, arrived on the island this morning.Dame Ann is replacing Gustave Feissel who left the island last night. [03] Participation of Cyprus in the Group of States Against CorruptionThe Cyprus Council of Ministers approved during its meeting of 1 July, the participation of Cyprus in the Convention for the establishment of the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO).The Convention was prepared in the framework of a special Committee of the Council of Europe. GRECO will monitor the implementation of the Convention and the application of the guiding principles against corruption by member states, which were approved by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe last year. So far twelve member states have expressed their intention to participate. The Group of States Against Corruption will be established when 14 member states declare their intention for participation in this Convention.
