[01] Cyprus government ready to attend UN led peace talks

The Cyprus government is ready to participate in any process provided that it does not undermine the legitimacy of the Republic, Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides told reporters at his daily briefing yesterday.

He also stressed that peace talks for a Cyprus settlement should be held between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.

Commenting on reports about the possibility of a "Dayton" or "Camp David" type of process, promoted by Richard Holbrooke and his team, Stylianides reiterated that "the dialogue for a Cyprus solution should remain bicommunal within the UN framework and the Secretary General's good offices mission".

Mr Stylianides acknowledged that there is "a momentum and an initiative" but urged for confidentiality.

Referring to the Russian initiative, he said that the Cyprus government believes "that any discussion on Cyprus by the UN Security Council helps towards curbing Turkish intransigence".

[02] Travel statistics - February 1998

The Department of Statistics and Research announced that during the month of February 1998, arrivals of travellers to Cyprus including excursionists reached 105.366 recording an increase of 16.0% compared to the same month last year. Departures of travellers reached 99.299 recording an increase of 19.4%.

The majority of travellers excluding excursionists arriving in Cyprus in February 1998, came from European countries (87,6%) and specifically from EU countries (74,9%).

The United Kingdom remains the most important source of tourism with a share of 37% of the total, followed by Greece 18,5% and Germany with 10, 8%.

[03] Consumer price index for March, 1998

The Department of Statistics and Research announced the Consumer Price Index for March, 1998. The index increased by 0,75 units or 0,62% to 120,99 units compared to 120,24 in the previous month. This was mainly due to the increases in the prices of clothing, footwear and furniture following the end of the winter sales. Decreases were mainly recorded in the prices of electricity and certain fresh fruit.

The average rate of increase of the Index for the last twelve months (i.e. April 1997 - March 1998) was 3,33% compared to the preceding twelve months (i.e. April 1996 - March 1997).
