[01] EU Parliament welcomes Cyprus' inclusion in enlargement process

The European Union following a debate on 17.12.97 of the outcome of the Luxembourg EU summit of Dec.12-13 has adopted a resolution covering all aspects of the Luxembourg decisions .

In the enlargement section of the resolution paragraph 12 is devoted to Cyprus and says that the EU parliament "shares the European Council's view of the special significance of Cypriot accession; welcomes the commitment of the Presidency and the Commission in cooperation with the Government of Cyprus, to secure the inclusion of representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community in the accession negotiation delegation, and calls upon Turkey to refrain from any unilateral steps that may hinder the accession process.".

[02] French Foreign Minister urges Turkey to take up EU offer

Hubert Vedrine, the French Foreign Minister speaking to the French media was asked whether Turkey's threats for the annexation of the northern part of Cyprus might put an end to a dialogue with Turkey, to which he replied: "For the moment they are just threats. It has to be verified whether this is really the point of view of the Turkish authorities. Of course, if this really is an increase in tension, then it would mean that Turkey has chosen this road rather than to maintain a dialogue with Europe."

The French Foreign Minister then went on to say that "the French authorities regret that the European Union was not able to formulate a proposal more adapted, or more open to Turkey".

He then explained the EU offer to Turkey and added that it would be wise if Turkey took up the offer and strive to fulfil the EU conditions. This would be the road of wisdom, he said, for Turkey, for the Union and for the Cyprus question.

[03] Cyprus new Ambassador to Israel

The new Cypriot Ambassador to Israel Mr. Euripides Evryviades has presented his credentials to President Ezer Weizman.

Following the presentation the two men had an exchange of views and the Israeli President was briefed about recent developments in the Cyprus problem.

There was an exchange of views on bilateral and regional issues of common interest and they expressed satisfaction over existing relations between Cyprus and Israel, pledging to boost them even further.

[04] Euro-Med loan for Cyprus project

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Cyprus have signed an agreement for a 30 million ECU loan for the first construction phase of the Paphos area sewage system.

This is the first EIB loan to Cyprus under the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership concept adopted of Barcelona in 1995 to bolster co-operation between the European Union and the non-member Mediterranean countries.
