Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 97-10-06Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>News UpdateMonday, 06/10/97CONTENTS[01] UN Undersecretary for Political Affairs met with Foreign Minister KasoulidesCyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides had a meeting on Friday (3.10.97) with United Nations Under-Secretary for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast in New York.Present at the meeting was also Mr. Diego Cordovez, the UN Secretary- General's Special Adviser on Cyprus. The meeting involved a general review of the present conditions of the Cyprus question. The issue of the appointment by the UN of a third member of the Committee on Missing Persons was also raised by the Cypriot side, with the aim of reconvening the Committee at the same time as the planned exchange of information between the two sides on missing persons. [02] Cyprus - EU Joint Parliamentary Committee convenes in BrusselsThe Cyprus - European Union Joint Parliamentary Committee is meeting between 6-8 October 1997 in Brussels for its 12th session.Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has arrived in Brussels for the meeting from New York where he held meetings on the sidelines of UN General Assembly. The Cypriot delegation, headed by the President of the Parliamentary Affairs Committee Tassos Papadopoulos comprises twelve MPs from all parliamentary parties. Among the issues the Committee will examine are the political situation in Cyprus, the EU - Cyprus relations, the recent UN-sponsored direct talks between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and the living conditions of the enclaved in the Turkish -occupied areas. The Committee will also discuss the EU's "Agenda 2000" policy document on Cyprus and other candidate countries for the Union's expansion, the island 's custom union agreement with the EU, the GATT agreement, economic issues, tourism, and Europe's policy on the Mediterranean. [03] Austrian President of Parliament visits CyprusThe President of Austria's Parliament Dr. Heinz Fischer arrived in Cyprus for a 2-day visit on Friday (3.10.97) at the invitation of the Cypriot President of the House of Representatives Spyros Kyprianou.Dr. Fischer, heading a six member intra-party delegation, also met with political party leaders, Nicosia Municipality councillors, the Acting Foreign Minister and visited the Austrian contingent of the UN peacekeeping force UNFICYP. Speaking after meeting his Cypriot counterpart, Dr. Fischer said the purpose of his brief visit was: "To improve the relations between Austria and Cyprus, exchange information, have a look at the present situation, contribute to a peaceful development and in particular between the two parliaments." Mr. Kyprianou thanked Mr. Fischer for Austria's contribution to the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus and briefed him on the latest developments in Cyprus. [04] Czech Minister visits CyprusCzech Minister of Agriculture, Joseph Lux, who arrived in Cyprus on Friday 3.10.97, said on arrival that his country has not and will not recognise the fait accompli of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, which resulted in the division and partial occupation of the island.The Czech Republic will continue to support the search for a just Cyprus settlement, he stressed. Speaking on arrival, Mrs Lux said the Czech Republic would welcome Cypriot produce and wishes to enhance trade links with Cyprus. He also backed a proposed convention for the protection of investments. His Cypriot counterpart Costas Petrides welcomed the prospect of enhanced cooperation in agriculture between the two countries. [05] International shipping Conference opens in Nicosia"Maritime Cyprus" international Conference began on Monday (6.10.97) in Nicosia with the title "A New Era in Shipping". More than 1,000 participants from 40 countries are attending. The 3-day Conference is a bi-annual event attended by overseas and local shipowners, shipmanagers, bankers, lawyers and many other professionals in the Shipping industry.Acting President of the Republic Spyros Kyprianou opened the 5th "Maritime Cyprus". The gathering was addressed by Cyprus Minister of Communications and Works Mr Leontios Ierodiakonou, the President of the Cyprus Shipping Council Mr Juergen Hahn, the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organisation Mr William O'Neil, Mr Roberto Salvarini, Head of the Maritime Transport Unit at the European Commission, Mr Chris Horrocks, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping and by Mr David Cockroft, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers Federation. Chairing the sessions is Dr Vassos Pyrgos, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Works.
