[01] Agreement on investigation of the fate of the missing

A new start could be achieved to the on-going issue of missing persons since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

After a meeting held on Thursday at the residence of UN envoy in Cyprus, Gustave Feissel, in the UN-controlled Nicosia airport area, president Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash agreed to exchange information about the missing.

According to a UN press release the two leaders agree that the problem of the missing persons in Cyprus "is a purely humanitarian issue" and that "no political exploitation should be made by either side".

Each side will designate a person who will exchange information about the missing and make the necessary arrangements for the return of the remains of the missing persons, by the end of September 1997.

There is a total number of 1619 people missing since the Turkish invasion in 1974, including Greek Cypriot men, women and children and five American nationals. The Turkish Cypriot side reports that there are around 500 Turkish Cypriots missing since the intercommunal clashes in 1963.

[02] Greek Cypriot convicted for passing on AIDS virus

In a landmark case, a Greek Cypriot was yesterday sentenced to 15 months in prison for negligently infecting his British girlfriend with AIDS. The full sentence provided by the law for such an offence is 2 years but the judge took into consideration the Greek Cypriot's health condition and sentenced him to only 15 months.

The Greek Cypriot was found guilty of repeated sexual contact with his girlfriend without telling her about his condition.

The woman found out that she was HIV-positive in 1994 but chose to stay with him until July 1996 when she developed the disease and decided to file a complaint against the Greek Cypriot.
