[01] EU Presidency envoys have contacts in Cyprus

High ranking official of the Dutch European Union presidency, Count Jan d' Assembourg, accompanied by the presidency's representative for Cyprus Kester Heaslip held talks here on Tuesday (13.5.97) with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kassoulides. They also conferred with UN resident special representative Gustave Feissel, the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, the EU Ambassadors to Nicosia and US Ambassador Kenneth Brill.

Speaking to the press after his meeting with the Cypriot Foreign Minister, Count d' Assembourg expressed the European Union's hope that direct negotiations between President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash "will start at the end of June or beginning of July."

UN Resident Representative, Gustave Feissel, has been holding separate meetings with President Clerides and Denktash, preparing the ground for face-to-face talks.

"We have been discussing the problems, both sides have ... and we will take all that into account in our evaluation, as far as the accession talks with Cyprus are concerned," he added. The Count confirmed accession negotiations will begin with Cyprus six months after the Intergovernmental Conference, and said that "we expect that these negotiations will start beginning of 1998."

[02] Two Cypriot films win awards

Two Cypriot films produced with the help of a government subsidy have won awards at two prestigious film festivals.

At the Mondevideo International Film Festival, the film "Roads and Oranges" directed by Aliki Danezis Knudsen won special mention along with three other films by well known directors. The Mondevideo festival is an important event in Latin America, as it promotes commercial cinema as well as artistic production in the world of film.

Young Cypriot director Erena Ioannides won a "special mention for creative quality" at the Houston World Film Festival for her film "Her Violet Garden". At Houston 4.150 films from 31 countries were shown. The Cinema Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from both the public and private sector, has since its inception in 1994 proposed that 12 Cypriot films be part-financed by the government.

Six of those have been completed already.
