[01] President back from India
President Glafcos Clerides returned to Cyprus yesterday after a six-day
state visit to India during which he held meetings with his Indian
counterpart Shanker Dayal Sharma and Premier H.D. Deve Gowda.
In a statement to Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation before leaving India, the
President said India backs more intensive efforts to help settle the
protracted Cyprus question and opposes any solution resulting in the
abolition of the Republic of Cyprus or the creation of two separate
states.
[02] UN envoy assures government on Varosha
The UN Secretary General's Resident Representative in Cyprus, Gustave
Feissel, assured the Cyprus government on Friday (14.2.97) that there is
nothing to worry about regarding threats made by Turkish occupation regime
leader, Rauf Denktash, to illegally settle Varosha.
Feissel told Acting Cypriot President Spyros Kyprianou that he had had a
meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash who said that reports to
this effect are not correct.
[03] Consumer price index
The Department of Statistics and Research has announced that the Consumer
Price Index for the month of January 1997 has remained the same as for the
previous month standing at 118,07 units.
