[01] UN Secretary General sends letter on Cyprus

The UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, in a letter to Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, said an overall solution to the Cyprus problem can only be achieved through mutual concessions, within the framework of negotiations between the leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.

In the letter, published on 9 February in the Greek daily ''To Vima'', Annan supports that the elements required to draft a settlement are already on the table, namely the high level agreements of 1977 and 1979 providing for a bicommunal, bizonal federation, the UN Security Council resolutions, the Ghali Set of Ideas, as well as other ideas examined over the years.

Annan clearly outlines the procedure for the negotiations, which he believes will start in the coming months and expresses an intention to decide on the next steps, as negotiations progress and after he is fully briefed by his envoys.

For this reason, he is asking Greece and Turkey to offer their full support, emphasising the urgency for a Cyprus settlement.

According to press reports, similar letters were sent to President Glafcos Clerides, Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and Turkish Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller.
