[01] President Clerides' New Year message

President Clerides has assured the Cypriot people that the government is ready to respond positively and constructively to the forthcoming international effort to solve the Cyprus problem, provided that human rights and basic freedoms are safeguarded, that foreign troops and settlers are withdrawn, and that conditions are provided in a functional constitution enabling Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Armenians, Latins and Maronites to live together in peace.

He emphasised that he would personally spare no effort towards finding a solution but at the same time made it known that the Greek Cypriot side would not make any concessions that would not safeguard their future on this island.

[02] Constitutional amendment approved

The House of Representatives yesterday amended the constitution governing election procedures regarding parliamentary seats which have been vacated.

According to the amendment, a vacated seat will automatically be taken up by the runner up of the party to which the vacated seat had belonged, thereby doing away with the need for by-elections.

Yesterday's parliamentary decision paves the way for Akel's runner-up Christodoulos Veniamin to enter the House upon Dimitris Kontides' election as mayor of Limassol.
