[01] E.U.: Status quo in Cyprus not acceptable

The European Union has once more stressed that the status quo in Cyprus is not acceptable.

The European Union's stand was contained in the EU statement made by Irish Foreign Minister Dick Spring in the UN General Assembly in New York yesterday (24 September).

The European Union also "reaffirmed its strong support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General aimed at a negotiated and lasting solution to the Cyprus question which will respect the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and unity of the country in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions".

Cyprus Foreign Minister, Alecos Michaelides, welcomed the European Union's position on Cyprus, saying the statement highlights the fact that the prospect of Cyprus' accession to the European Union offers an opportunity to solve the Cyprus problem. It also stresses, he said, the need for intensifying international efforts to achieve a lasting settlement.

[02] Clerides: Turkey seeks to consolidate faits accomplis

President Glafkos Clerides stressed that Turkey's aim in Cyprus is not to ensure the protection of Turkish Cypriots, but to consolidate the faits accomplis, through the presence of a large number of troops in violation of dozens of U.N. resolutions.

Speaking at the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Relations in New York, President Clerides made a brief review of the Cyprus problem and explained the basic aims of Turkey's expansionist policy on Cyprus. "The Turkish side seeks to achieve international recognition of the pseudo-state and then it will decide if it wants a solution based on federation," he said.

[03] Michaelides discusses Cyprus problem with Greek and Australian Foreign Ministers

Cyprus Foreign Minister Alecos Michaelides began yesterday (24.9.96) a series of contacts at the UN headquarters which included meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Greece, Australia, Slovenia and Moldova.

Michaelides exchanged views with Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos on various aspects of the Cyprus problem and on the efforts being made in Europe concerning the Cyprus issue.

With the Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, Michaelides discussed bilateral issues and briefed him on recent developments in Cyprus. Mr Downer said that in his speech to the UN General Assembly he will make special reference to the problem of Cyprus.

Michaelides also addressed the commemorative meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement on the 35 years since its foundation, on behalf of the European member-states of NAM.

[04] British Foreign Secretary: No unilateral British initiative

British Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind, replying to a question in the course of a press conference in New York, said that he does not envisage a unilateral British initiative on Cyprus. "We want to work closely with others in the European Union, the United States and elsewhere and of course with the United Nations who are involved in this crucial matter. The United Kingdom does have a very strong commitment to do what we can to contribute towards progress with regard to Cyprus", he said.
