Daily briefing of the Press by the Government Spokesman

22 October 2003

At the beginning of today's briefing of the press, the Government Spokesman Mr Kypros Chrysostomides referred to the Turkish Foreign Ministers visit in Athens and stated that despite the efforts made by the Foreign Minister of Greece to discuss issues concerning the Cyprus problem, it was proved that Mr Gul was not ready to talk about such issues in Athens. This proves once more, Mr Chrysostomides added, how right the President of the Republic was when he foresaw that Turkey would not make any gesture during the Turkish Foreign Ministers visit in Athens. There were rumours that troops would be withdrawn and other measures would be announced and this is proved to be unfounded, Mr Chrysostomides said.

The Government Spokesman said that Mr Guls statement that the Cyprus issue would be solved when all parties concerned were members of the European Union seemed to be in line with General Ozgioks statements and, of course, it again proved that the Turkish Government supported Mr Denktash. It seems that at some point this statement was refuted, Mr Chrysostomides added, however there is no specific information.
