investments balance [01] House President and Qatar ambassador discuss Cyprus problem & investmentsCNA - Cyprus/NICOSIA 20/10/2016 14:16The Cyprus problem, Qatar`s interest in investments as well as developments in the Middle East were discussed during a meeting on Thursday between House of Representatives President and Acting President Demetris Syllouris and new Qatar Ambassador to Nicosia Sultan Ibrahim Yousef Ibrahim Al-Mahmoud. During the meeting Syllouris referred to the ongoing process aiming to resolve the Cyprus problem and reunite Cyprus which has been divided since Turkey invaded the island in 1974 and occupied its northern third and spoke of "the obstacles posed by Turkey", an official press release says. On his part the ambassador of Qatar stressed his country`s great interest for further cooperation between the two countries in the area of investments, it adds. [02] Surplus of €13.5 bn in August 2016, for the EU28 current account balanceCNA - Athanasios Athanasiou - Belgium/Brussels 20/10/2016 14:31The EU28 seasonally adjusted current account of the balance of payments recorded a surplus of €13.5 bn in August 2016, compared with surpluses of €11.3 bn in July 2016 and €8.2 bn in August 2015, according to estimates from Eurostat. In August 2016, compared with July 2016, based on seasonally adjusted data, the surplus of the goods account increased (+€11.7 bn compared with +€9.7 bn), as did the surplus of the services account (+€11.0 bn compared with +€10.1 bn). The deficit of the primary income account grew slightly (-€2.3 bn compared with -€2.2 bn), as did the deficit of the secondary income account (-€6.9 bn compared with -€6.3 bn). The 12-month accumulated current account for the period ending in August 2016 recorded a surplus of €160.5 bn, compared with €149.6 bn for the 12 months to August 2015. The surplus of the goods ... [03] Record tourist arrivals in September 2016CNA - CYPRUS/Nicosia 20/10/2016 14:19Tourist arrivals increased by 16,7% in September compared to the same month last year, making September 2016 the best ever recorded in Cyprus. On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, arrivals of tourists reached 421.201 in September 2016 compared to 360.899 in September 2015, recording an increase of 16,7%. September 2016 had the highest volume of tourist arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the specific month. For the period of January - September 2016 arrivals of tourists totaled 2.617.218 compared to 2.203.599 in the corresponding period of 2015, recording an increase of 18,8% and out numbering the total arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the first nine months of the year. Arrivals from Russia increase significantly Tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom increased by 3,0% in September 2016 compared to September 2015 while an increase of 51,8% was recorded for tourists from Russia. Increases were also recorded from other important tourist markets, such as Sweden (22,1%), Israel (20,5%), Greece (24,7%) and Germany (1,4%). Contrary to that, a decrease of 1,7% in tourist arrivals from Norway was recorded. Main countries The United Kingdom and Russia constitute the main sources of tourism for Cyprus, with proportions of 35,5% and 27,2% respectively, while arrivals from Sweden comprise 4,6% and from Israel 4,2% of total arrivals. Characteristics of tourists For a percentage of 87,7% of tourists, the purpose of their trip was holidays, for 8,1% was visit to friends and relatives and for 4,1% business. Women comprise 48,8% of tourists and men 51,2%, whilst most of the tourists belonged to the age group of 20-44 years. [04] Industrial Turnover down in July 2016CNA - CYPRUS/Nicosia 20/10/2016 14:14The Industrial Turnover Index for July 2016 reached 85,6 units (base 2010=100), recording a decrease of 5,2% compared to July 2015, according to data released Thursday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus. For the period January - July 2016, the index showed a decrease of 2,4% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. For Manufacturing, the index for July 2016 reached 84,4 units, recording a decrease of 6,9% compared to July 2015. Obesity in men is more widespread at 16.3% and women follow at 12.9%, of which 5.4% are aged between 18-25 years, 7.1% 25 to 34, 11.8% 35 to 44, 19.5% 45 to 64, 23.5% 65 to 74 and 23.5% over 75 years old. Obesity in Cyprus is correlated to education levels while 21.1% of the obese have lower or no education, 14,6% medium and only 9.3% received higher education. In General Cyprus is close but lower in obesity rates, than the EU average Meanwhile 46.1% of those aged 18 or over living in the European Union (EU) had a normal weight in 2014, slightly more than half of the adults (51.6%) were considered as over-weight (35.7% pre-obese and 15.9% obese) and a further 2.3% as under-weight.
