According to an official press release, Photiou briefed the Chinese Ambassador on issues related to his competencies and elaborated on the serious problems and the challenges in efforts to solve the tragic problem of missing persons, noting the pain and the agony of their families for so many decades and asking for China`s contribution to this humanitarian issue. He noted the role and the responsibilities of Turkey, in causing and not solving this tragedy, underlining that Ankara must cooperate seriously and honestly. In statements to the press after the meeting, President Anastasiades said that they had a productive discussion during which they discussed the issues of effective participation in a federal Cyprus and the decision making process in various committees as well as quotas. He said they discussed the issue of an EU Joint Committee and how decisions will be taken "so that the state will function effectively and will be able to take timely decisions with its participation in the EU. In an interview with CNA during his official visit in Nicosia, Jagland also said that although not directly involved in settlement talks, the Council of Europe (CoE) may indirectly contribute towards improving contacts between the two communities in Cyprus. He referred in particular to the European Convention on Human Rights, which according to the Secretary General, may act as a "Confidence Building Measure", when taking stock of its "unifying effect" in Europe.
