[01] Former Cyprus President donates his personal digital archives to the University of Cyprus

Former President of the Republic, George Vassiliou, has donated his personal digital archives, referring to his five-year term in office (1988-1993), to the University of Cyprus.

The archives include, among others, the full texts of Vassiliou`s talks on the Cyprus problem with the then Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, under the auspices of the then UN Secretary General Javier FPérez de Cuéllar and his successor Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

Speaking on Thursday at a ceremony during which he signed an agreement for his donation,with the University of Cyprus Rector, Constantinos Christofides, Vassiliou said that dozens of people, among which several students, worked for almost ten years to set up these digital archives, adding that the whole venture costed several hundred thousand euro.

[02] Boris Johnson says Cyprus on the verge of "great progress"

Boris Johnson has said that Cyprus is potentially on the verge of some great progress in terms of reaching a negotiated settlement to the long-standing division following the Turkish invasion of 1974 and the subsequent 42-year long illegal occupation of the northern part of the island.

Appearing before the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday, where he answered questions on a number of foreign policy issues, the UK Foreign Secretary was asked by Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell whether he would work with the Cypriots for a "fair and amicable" solution, while preserving the British sovereignty over the military bases in Akrotiri and Dhekelia.

Minister of Finance Harris Georgiades has called for the continuation of the reform and fiscal consolidation effort that would enable Cyprus to achieve an investment grade rating.

Although Cyprus has successfully completed its economic adjustment programme last March, its sovereign ratings are still considered as junk which adversely affect the island`s borrowing costs.

Summarizing the preconditions set by rating agencies, Georgiades said these are "the prudent public finances management, the continued support to economic recovery, the consolidation of the banking sector and the sustained promotion of the reforms and changes which the economy needs.

[04] CoE Chairmanship takes Cyprus on European centre-stage, SG Jagland tells CNA

Cyprus will be on the European centre-stage during the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, says CoE Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland and expresses confidence that Nicosia will contribute to progressing the organisation`s agenda to the 47 member states.

Jagland spoke to the Cyprus News Agency, ahead of a series of meetings he has Friday, in the Cypriot capital, in the framework of preparations for the Chairmanship of Cyprus, between November 22, 2016 and May 19, 2017.

"We look forward to the Cypriot Chairmanship as it promises to tackle many pressing issues" Jagland has stated.
