  • [01] Nuland to hold separate meetings with Anastasiades and Akinci on Thursday

    US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland will hold seperate meetings on Thursday with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.

    Nuland will also have a meeting on Thursday with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, while during her stay on the island she will meet with UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide.

    Meanwhile, Anastasiades and Akinci will hold a new meeting on Thursday, in the framework of the UN-led negotiations, aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.

    [02] Index of Production in Construction up by 10.9%

    The Index of Production in Construction for the second quarter of 2016 reached 50.7 units (base year 2010=100,0), recording an increase of 10.9% over the second quarter of 2015, the Statistical Service said on Wednesday.

    By type of project, an increase of 5.3% was observed for buildings and of 34.2% for civil engineering projects in the second quarter of 2016 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2015.

    As regards the Output Prices Index in Construction, CyStat said that for the second quarter of 2016 it reached 96.7 units (base year 2010=100,0), recording a decrease of 1.0% over the first quarter of 2016.

    Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the index recorded a decrease of 3.9%.

    [03] Building permits rise in first seven months

    Building permits authorised by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices in the first seven months of the year increased, the Statistical Service of Cyprus said on Wednesday.

    From January to July 2016, 3.053 building permits were issued compared to 2.974 in the corresponding period of the previous year.

    However, the total value of these permits decreased by 10.4% and the total area by 0.3%.

    Ōhe number of dwelling units recorded an increase of 6.6%.

    The Statistical Service said that the number of building permits authorized by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices in July stood at 442.

    The total value of these permits reached ā‚¬84,6 million and the total area 90.8 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 382 dwelling units.*The full text of the news item is available in the paid version of the CNA web service.

    [04] House Price Index down by 0.9% in Q2

    The House Price Index (HPI) for the second quarter of 2016 decreased by 0.9%, compared to the first quarter of 2016, the Statistical Service said on Wednesday.

    According to a preliminary estimate of the Statistical Service, the Index amounts to 85.57 units.

    [05] House prices down in Cyprus by -0,9 and -8,9 in quarterly and annual basis

    House prices, in Cyprus dropped by -0.9 in quarterly and by -8,9 in annual basis in the second quarter of 2016, according to Eurostat`s housing index. That decrease was also the largest in the EU in both accounts.

    Meanwhile in the euro area house prices rose by 2.9% and by 4.0% in the EU in the second quarter of 2016 compared with the same quarter of the previous year.

    Compared with the first quarter of 2016, house prices rose by 1.4% in the euro area and by 1.6% in the EU in the second quarter of 2016.

    Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest annual increases in house prices in the second quarter of 2016 were recorded in Hungary and Latvia (both +10.3%), Austria (+9.0%), the United Kingdom (+8.8%) and Sweden (+8.7%), while falls were observed in Cyprus (-8.9%) and Italy (-1.4%).
