[01] We will continue working for a Cyprus solution, President says

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades reiterated on Friday that he will continue to work for a solution of the Cyprus problem.

The President was addressing an event for the unveiling of a monument dedicated to the EOKA 55-59 fight against the British rule in Cyprus, in Paralimni, situated in the southeast of Cyprus.

He noted that in order to prevent Turkey`s partitionist plans for Cyprus "we must exhaust all possibilities".

[02] Multinational Exercise "NEMESIS 2016" to take place within Cyprus' EEZ

The large-scale Multinational Exercise "NEMESIS - 2016" will be conducted for the third consecutive year, on Wednesday the 12th of October 2016 from 09:00 am until 14:00 within the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Defence, the Exercise will be held with the participation of SAR Units and Personnel from Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, the United Kingdom and the United States of America as well as the M/V «ALEXANDRIA» of Petronav from the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and the support vessels of EDT Offshore.

Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) Larnaca will be coordinating the exercise in collaboration with the respective agencies from the Republic of Cyprus and the participating nations.

[03] President Anastasiades: There is no case for an interim agreement

There is no case for an interim agreement to the Cyprus problem, the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, repeated Friday.

In his remarks to reporters, following his return to the Presidential Palace from the site of the talks on the Cyprus problem, the President of the Republic said that, today, he and Mustafa Akıncı, the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, discussed issues concerning competencies of the central government, of the constituent states, but also the responsibility that the state will have toward international obligations, so that there will be an oversight for the implementation of the obligations of the federal Republic of Cyprus.

As the President said, on most of the competencies of the central government there is convergence.

[04] Germany donates 100,000 Euro to the CMP

The Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) has expressed its sincere thanks to the Federal Republic of Germany for its donation of EUR 100,000 made today.

This brings the German financial assistance to the CMP to a total of EUR 400,000 over the past ten years, said a press release issued here today by CMP.

This donation to the CMP Project on the Exhumation, Identification and Return of Remains of Missing Persons in Cyprus will contribute to the Committee's goal of identifying and returning as many remains of missing individuals as possible in order to bring an end to the uncertainty which has affected so many families for so many years, the press release notes.

[05] Eide says he is glad to end the week on a 'good note'

UNSG's Special Adviser for Cyprus Espen Barth Eide said on Friday that he is glad to end the week on a good note after three productive leaders` meetings in a row. Eide posted this on his personal twitter account following today`s meeting between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.

Following a tripartite meeting with UNSG Ban Ki Moon in New York on September 25, the leaders embarked on a new round of intensified talks.

[06] French Defence Minister describes cooperation with Cyprus as excellent

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian expressed the appreciation of Paris over Cyprus` support to the French armed forces in their fight against ISIS. He also underlined the excellent cooperation between the two countries in security and defence matters.

According to a press release issued by the French Embassy in Nicosia, Le Drian met on Thursday in Larnaca with the Defence Minister of Cyprus Christophoros Fokaides, after visiting aircraft carrier " Charles de Gaulle", which is sailing in the Eastern Mediterranean.

[07] MP Tornaritis calls for full implementation of EU principles in Cyprus

MP Nikos Tornaritis called for the full implementation of EU values and principles, as well as the acquis communautaire in the case of Cyprus, pointing out that for forty two years, human rights of all Cypriots are violated by Turkey.

Tornaritis was speaking at the Informal Meeting of European Union Presidents of Parliaments of EU Member States in Bratislava, where he represented the President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris.

According to an official announcement, at the meeting the participants exchanged views on the current challenges that threaten the unity of the EU and on the efforts to reduce the gap between the Union and European citizens, as well as for future EU targets in relation to the role of national parliaments, the EU`s internal cohesion and its active participation in global affairs.

[09] Cyprus current account records deficit in Q2 of 2016

Cyprus current account deteriorated in the second quarter of 2016, as it recorded a deficit of â?¬456.8 million compared to a surplus of â?¬69.6 million in the same quarter of 2015, according to the latest provisional balance of payments data of the Central Bank of Cyprus.

The international investment position of Cyprus recorded a small improvement in the second quarter of the year, reaching a net liability position of â?¬21.489 million compared with â?¬21.604 million in the first quarter.

The external debt of Cyprus amounted to â?¬96.549 million in the second quarter of 2016, compared to â?¬98.049 million in the previous quarter.

[10] FinMin issues 6 year T-bills, tenders accepted for â?¬364,000

The Public Debt Management Office of the Ministry of Finance announced on Friday that on Thursday it issued 6 year Treasury Bills for natural persons, of a total value of â?¬5 million, but accepted 8 tenders of a total value of â?¬364,000.

According to the announcement 11 tenders for the total amount of â?¬7,864,000 were received. It is further clarified that three tenders were submitted by foreign investors.

[11] French TOTAL gears up for first exploratory drilling in block 11

French energy heavyweight TOTAL said on Thursday that block 11 in the Cypriot EEZ, which is adjacent to the Egyptian giant gas field Zhor, contains geologic structures which could carry natural gas.

Total signed today a contract with EDT Agency Services Ltd, a subsidiary of the EDT Offshore Group, a contract for Onshore Logistics Base Services in the Limassol port, paving the way for the commencement of exploratory drilling in block 11 in 2017. The ceremony took place in the presence of Ministers of Energy and Transport Yiorgos Lakkotrypis and Marios Demetriades respectively.

"The prospective geologic formations proved up by the Zhor discovery are believed to extend in block 11," Yves Grosjean, General Manager Total E&P B.V Cyprus addressing the signing ceremony, clarifying that "it is not the Zhor gas field itself that extends in Block 11, but the rock formations."

"And we have identified in Block 11 some geologic structures which could also contain gas," he added.

However Grosjean warned that the chance for discovery are 25% due to the unknowns associated with such emerging hydrocarbon provinces.

"It may take several wells and possibly also several years before an economic discovery is eventually made," he pointed out.

Grosjean said that such a deep water development "would most certainly cost around â?¬5 to â?¬10 billion and would take 5 to 10 years to get off the ground."

Noting that there are several market and pricing options, Grosjean said that among the possible marketing options is the Egyptian market, recalling the agreement between Cyprus and Egypt for the export of the Aphrodite, a gas find operated by Noble Energy, Delek and BG Group containing 4.5 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Regarding an LNG plant in Cyprus, Grosjean said this could be on option "if the discovery is very big."

On his part, Marios Demetriades, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, said the objective of everyone here is that all these oil and gas exploration companies proceed with their work in the fastest possible way.

"We want the companies to be serviced the best possible way and of course we see a lot of future for Cyprus as a regional centre for providing this kind of services," he added, assuring both TOTAL and EDT that the government will support in every way this kind of operations "because we do believe that the oil-gas sector has a large future in Cyprus."

Mike Socratous, EDT Operational Manager said, "our vision with the support of TOTAL, is to firmly establish the EDT shore base in Limassol port as a leading logistical solution in supporting drilling campaigns throughout the Cyprus EEZ and even further afield around the Eastern Mediterranean."

[14] CoE Committee adopts suggestion by Cypriot Commissioner Koursoumba to hear children out

An Ad Hoc Committee of the Council of Europe adopted a suggestion by Cypriot Commissioner for Children`s Rights, Leda Koursoumba, to give children the opportunity to voice their opinion over matters that concern them.

According to an official announcement, the Ad Hoc Committee for the Rights of the Child convened for the first time in Strasbourg, between September 28 and 29 and discussed the protection of children`s rights in the world wide web, as well as the rights of children who are on the move.

An announcement by the office of the Cypriot Commissioner notes that Koursoumba, who takes part in the Ad Hoc Committee as an expert, expressed her opinion over the state of play in Cyprus.

[15] European Commission has allocated more than â?¬11 mln to tackle youth unemployment in Cyprus

European Commissioner for Employment Marianne Thyssen presented on Tuesday, in Strasbourg, the main achievements of the Youth Guarantee and Youth Employment Initiative (YEI) since their launch in 2013.

According to the data on Cyprus, 19.8% of the youth population aged 15-24 not in employment, education or training was reached by the Youth Guarantee, in their effort to start their own business venture.

[16] Åurostat: Cyprus has the youngest primary school teaching work force in the EU

Cyprus employs 4,000 primary school teachers, 83.7% of whom are female, 16.3% male and only 3.5% aged over 50, making for the youngest teaching work force in any EU country, according to Eurostat.

At the same time Cyprus has 6,000 secondary school teachers, 65.7% of whom are female, 34.3% male and only 29.3% aged over 50, the 7th youngest teaching work force in the EU, after Malta, the UK, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania and Ireland.

On both accounts though, Cyprus follows the EU trend, where the teaching work force is heavily tilted towards female professionals.

In 2014, 2.1 million persons worked as primary school teachers in the European Union. Women were largely predominant, accounting for 85% (1.7 million teachers). In secondary schools, including both lower secondary and upper secondary levels, there were 3.6 million teachers, of which 64% ( ...

[17] Foreign Minister says end of line for everything achieved if multipartite fails, calls for EU participation

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides favours the participation of the EU in a multipartite meeting on the Cyprus issue, as long as the two sides are within reach of an agreement, and points out the importance of preparing properly for such a meeting.

Addressing a public discussion in Nicosia, organised by the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus on the EU on the international scene, Kasoulides said it would be a pity for such a meeting to take place and fail, as this would be "the end of the road" for everything achieved so far.

Replying to questions, he said the EU was very interested in the efforts for a Cyprus settlement, and expressed hope that the leaders of the two communities would give a role to High Representative Federica Mogherini.
