  • [01] Health Ministry closely monitors two H1N1 incidents

Two patients suffering from the so called "swine flu" (H1N1) have been admitted to a private hospital in Cyprus, the Ministry of Health has said, assuring that the situation is being monitored closely and that there is no cause for alarm.

An official press release issued Monday, says that the flu the two patients are infected with is the H1N1 virus of the 2009 pandemic which has taken on the behaviour of a seasonal influenza virus.

The situation is being monitored closely and there is no reason for alarm, the ministry adds. It is further noted that both incidents are of the seasonal influenza virus type which is also circulating in the rest of Europe.

[02] Cyprus Institute is a world-renowned research center, US Secretary of Energy says

United States Secretary of Energy Dr. Ernest Moniz referred to the contribution of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) in developing research and technology.

Speaking during an event in Manhattan, in honor of the Cyprus - US Chamber of Commerce, Moniz, who is also Honorary Trustee of the CyI, also highlighted efforts to turn the Institute into a world-renowned research center, in the fields of energy, water resources and the environment. Moniz is one of the founding members of the CyI, having contributed in the initial planning, from 2000 to 2002, and the Institute's operation.

He supported the Institute's development and was one of the architects for a cooperation agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Moniz also led research efforts for developing Cyprus' strategies concerning hydrocarbon resources in its exclusive economic zone.
