[01] President Anastasiades speaks on shipping at UCL
Shipping in Cyprus has evolved radically in the past 20 years to meet
international regulations on safety at sea and on the prevention of
pollution, the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades said in his
address on "The evolution of the shipping law" to the Faculty of Law at
UCL (University College London), during his visit to the British capital.
Tonight the President will address an audience at the London School of
Economics (LSE) on the geostrategic importance of Cyprus.
In his speech at UCL, where he obtained his Master's degree in
maritime law, the President made specific reference to the two areas of
international shipping that have evolved radically in the past 20 years,
that is matters relating to safety of life at sea and the prevention
of pollution from ships.
[02] «Horizon 2020» huge opportunity for Cyprus, EU Commissioner says
The new EU funding programme for Research and Innovation «Horizon 2020»
running from 2014 to 2020 with a €80 billion budget was presented here
on Thursday by the Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science
Marie Geoghegan-Quinn.
Speaking at the Official Launch of «Horizon 2020» in Cyprus, in the
presence of Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Zeta Emilianidou,
the Commissioner noted that the programme presents huge opportunities
for Cyprus, adding that research and innovation could be a tool to halt
the financial crisis through the development of innovative products
and services and job creation.
The key is the collaboration between business and academia, she
said. "We need them working hand in hand if we are going to develop
positive economic results".
