[01] Credit card transactions decline by 5% in 2013Credit card transactions in Cyprus for 2013 reached €2,156 million, registering a drop of 5% over 2012.According to figures released by JCC payment systems, transactions with credit cards in the domestic market in December reached 222.5 million, marking a decline of 4% year on year. Credit card payments to utilities and electronic shops increased by 4% in December 2013, while payments to public organizations, shopping malls, clothing and music shops declined. [02] Ôravel advice for Algeria and TunisiaThe Foreign Ministry has issued travel advice for the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus who are permanent residents, traveling or intend to travel to Algeria and Tunisia.On Algeria, the Ministry advises citizens to exercise caution and avoid traveling to areas where armed forces act and terrorist actions occur. On Tunisia, the Ministry advises citizens to exercise caution and avoid being in public areas where mass gatherings occur. [03] Production index in construction plunges by 33% in Q3 2013The Cyprus Index of Production in Construction for the third quarter of 2013 declined by 32.9% year on year, figures released on Wednesday by the Statistical Service show.The index is provisionally estimated at 45.6 units (base year 2010=100,0). Production in buildings declined by 31% whereas civil engineering projects registered a decrease of 37.1% year on year. [04] CoE Commissioner urges Cyprus to improve prison conditionsCouncil of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Nils Muižnieks has urged Cypriot authorities to improve prison conditions, after the last in a series of suicides of an inmate at the country's central prison."The latest suicide of a detainee in a prison in Cyprus exposes the urgency of improving prison conditions in the country", he says. Muižnieks welcomes the commitment of the Cypriot authorities to overhaul the prison system in full compliance with the recommendations set out by the reports of the Council of Europe Committee for the Prevention of Torture.
