The Italian navy rescued 236 immigrants on board a small vessel, which
was in distress in the Mediterranean.
[02] Greek Cypriot side expects no Security Council intervention,
sources said
The Greek Cypriot side does not expect, nor has any information on a
possible intervention by the Security Council, during the discussion to
renew UNFICYP mandate at the end of the month, in case of a stalemate
concerning an agreement over a joint declaration by the two sides
in Cyprus.
A reliable source told CNA that the Security Council is expected to
approve the renewal of the UNFICYP mandate - the peace-keeping force
stationed in Cyprus since 1964 - on January 29, and expects «nothing
concrete» in relation to a request by the UN Secretary-General to the
Security Council to intervene, in case no agreement is reached within
next week concerning a joint declaration, as information published in
the local Press say.
Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern
third. Previous UN - led efforts to reunify the island under a federal
roof have failed.

An estimated 50,000 pro-Western Ukrainians massed on Sunday in the heart
of Kiev amid swelling anger over the beating of prominent former minister
turned opposition leader Yuriy Lutsenko.
[04] DEFA approves documents for natural gas supply tender
The Board of Directors of the Natural Gas Public Company (DEFA) approved
the tender documents inviting for the expression of interest in the
supply of natural gas, to be used for electricity production.
According to an announcement issued yesterday, the tender invites
proposals for natural gas supply for a period for up to ten years,
beginning on January 1, 2016, to be delivered to the Vassilikos power
station, in the south-eastern coast of Cyprus.
The tender Documents were prepared on the basis of guidelines received
from the Cabinet and in consultation with the Cyprus Energy Regulation
Authority, the Energy Service of the Energy Ministry and other competent
authorities.
