A reliable source told CNA that the Security Council is expected to approve the renewal of the UNFICYP mandate - the peace-keeping force stationed in Cyprus since 1964 - on January 29, and expects «nothing concrete» in relation to a request by the UN Secretary-General to the Security Council to intervene, in case no agreement is reached within next week concerning a joint declaration, as information published in the local Press say.

Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Previous UN - led efforts to reunify the island under a federal roof have failed.
