  • [01] New national strategy for Merchant Shipping, says Minister

The Government prepares a new national strategy to further upgrade Cyprus Merchant Shipping Minister of Communications and Works Tasos Mitsopoulos said Friday after a meeting held at the Department of Merchant Shipping in Limassol where the issue was discussed.

In statements to the press, Mitsopoulos said that 2013 was a difficult year for Cypriot commercial shipping, which the Department of Merchant Shipping completed with great success, doing significant job at international level.

Mitsopoulos expressed the hope that the Cypriot ship registry and the shipping companies based in Cyprus will continue to grow and at the same time Cyprus' Merchant Shipping will meet the new needs that arise from the recent discoveries of natural gas deposits and possibly oil in Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone.

[02] Cyprus President expects "objectivity and an active stance" from UN SG

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades expects the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to act in an objective and active manner, for the implementation of all decisions taken by the Security Council and the high level agreements concerning Cyprus.

President Anastasiades made the statement on Friday, in response to questions by the press concerning a letter he sent recently to Ban.

Asked what his expectations are from the UN SG, President Anastasiades noted that he said again he expected objectivity and an active stance to implement Security Council resolutions and decisions reached at times by the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus.

[03] House President asks more democracy in future bailouts

House President Yiannakis Omirou expressed hope that from now on, member states' bailouts will be handled by a body that does not lack in democratic legitimacy and takes into consideration the principles of solidarity, social cohesion and development.

Omirou met here on Friday with a delegation form the European Parliament, which prepares a report on the role of the Troika (European Commission, ECB, IMF) in the formulation of financial adjustment programs.

National Parliaments should not find themselves "with a gun to their head", as it happened in Cyprus, Omirou stated after the meeting. Neither should member states be used for experiments, as it happened in Cyprus, with the depositors' haircut, the House President said.
