[03] EP committee mission for Troika to visit Cyprus on Friday

The subcommittee of the European Parliament looking into Troika actions in countries implementing a bailout programme, has postponed its visit to Athens but is set to arrive in Cyprus on Friday as scheduled.

The Secretariat of the Committee on Finance of the European Parliament notified on January 5 that Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz had agreed to postpone the delegation to Athens, set for Thursday.

The reasons for the postponement have not yet been clarified. However, sources in Strasbourg said Schulz was obliged to agree to the postponement at the insistence of Samaras.

[04] Interior Minister: Government measures to halt applications to IPC

Interior Minister Socratis Hasikos has said that halting applications by Greek Cypriots who resort to the so-called immovable properties commission (IPC) in Cyprus' northern Turkish occupied areas to sell their properties is not a simple matter, adding that the Ministry will propose measures on the matter that do not entail further cost to the government.

In statements to reporters on Tuesday, Hasikos said that Wednesday's meeting of the National Council, the top advisory body on the handling of the Cyprus problem, will examine the issue of Greek Cypriots resorting to the IPC to sell their properties in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus.

He said the Ministry of Interior has its own views and positions on the proposals submitted by the political parties in the framework of the subcommittee of the National Council, in an effort to avert the phenomenon.
