Coop Chief Mediterranean ambassador [01] House of Representatives ratifies cultural agreement with QatarThe Cyprus House plenary ratified unanimously on Thursday an agreement between Cyprus and Qatar on cultural cooperation.The agreement sets the general framework for cooperation between the two countries, including cultural exchanges, seminars and exhibitions, but is dependant on the prevailing financial context. In the present circumstances, it cannot be put in place. The agreement was signed on January 2012 in Nicosia, following a Cabinet decision on November 2011. [02] Cooperative Institutions should continue their social role, says Coop ChiefCyprus Cooperative Credit Institutions should continue its social role, Cooperative Central Bank Director General Erotokritos Chlorakiotis, who will retire on September 30, said on Friday.Chlorakiotis rebuffed new rumors that a haircut will be imposed on deposits in CCI`s as a means to achieve its recapitalisation, stressing the CCI`s capital needs amounting to €1.5 billion will be covered by the financial assistance programme for Cyprus agreed between the authorities and the Troika last March. The programme stipulated that large depositors will pay for the capital needs of Cyprus` largest lender, Bank of Cyprus, whereas Cyprus Popular Bank , the island`s second largest bank will be liquidated. For the CCI`s the programme notes that they should undergo a restructuring process which will reduce the number of individual cooperative credit institutions. [03] EU Commissioner announces "Erasmus for all" for southern MediterraneanThe launch of a new learning mobility program, Erasmus for All, following the success of Erasmus Mundus and Tempus, on January 1st 2014, focusing on Southern Mediterranean countries, was announced on Thursday by Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth.The "Information Day on Erasmus for All for Southern Mediterranean countries" took place on Thursday at the University of Nicosia. This program will focus on new Erasmus for All actions and Joint Doctorate within the future Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Programme. "Erasmus for All" is the new EU program for education, training, youth and sport proposed by the European Commission on 23 November 2011. The proposal is now under discussion by the Council (27 Member States) and the European Parliament who will take the final decision. Commissioner Vassiliou has said that more details will be revealed next week. [04] Huge potential for deeper China-Cyprus cooperation, says Chinese ambassadorLiu Xinsheng, China's ambassador to Cyprus said the potentials are huge for broader, deeper and more fruitful cooperation between China and Cyprus.Speaking on Thursday at a reception titled «China and Sina-Cyprus Relationship» the ambassador said that the two countries always support each other on the issues concerning their respective core interests and their relationship sets a good example of genuine friendship and cooperation between countries different in size. "There is strong economic complementarity between our two economies. The potentials are huge for broader, deeper and more fruitful cooperation" the ambassador said, noting that China and Cyprus are exploring possibilities of cooperation in energy, infrastructure, financial services and maritime shipping. [05] 36.3% of Cyprus' population never used the internetA high percentage of Cypriots, 36.3%, have never used the internet because they lack of skills, they do not believe is a necessity and also because of high cost. The percentage of EU citizens who haven't used the internet is 22.4%.Speaking Friday during a press conference at the Presidential Palace, Governent Spokesman Christos Stylianides and Permanent Secretary of Commerce Ministry Stelios Chimonas presented the action plan for the digital governance in Cyprus. Chimonas was appointed by the Cabinet as Cyprus' Digital Champion. A Digital Champion is appointed by each Member State and they work with citizens, communities and businesses to exploit the growth potential of the digital economy. According to Spokesman, Cyprus is at very low places in the EU as regards the use of digital technology, pointing out that studies have shown that in the near future, 90% of all job vacancies will require some level of digital knowledge.
