  • [01] Energy Minister unveils roadmap for natural gas exploitation

Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis has unveiled a roadmap for the exploitation of Cyprus' natural gas deposits.

Speaking during a press conference, in Nicosia, the Minister said the road map starts with the appraisal well in Cyprus' exclusive economic zone block 12 and ends with natural gas exports, by the end of 2019.

In 2008, Cyprus signed its first hydrocarbon exploration contract with US Noble Energy for offshore block 12. Exploratory drilling conducted by Noble in late 2011 revealed estimated gross mean resources of 7 trillion cubic feet.

[02] President: We are doing everything possible to restart the economy

We are doing everything possible to restart the economy, President Nicos Anastasiades has said, adding that he will soon give a press conference to review his government's term in office until now.

According to an official press release, speaking during an event organised at the Presidential Palace by ruling Democratic Party's Nicosia women's organization, Anastasiades said that "in such a difficult economic situation for our country, the contribution of everyone is necessary".

He noted that "we are doing our outmost by taking measures and giving incentives to achieve a better management of state expenses on the one hand and on the other hand to create prospects, achieve at last the anticipated growth, recovery and restart of the economy, to be able to stand on our feet, overcome problems and bring dignity and pride back to our citizens."

[03] Deflation recorded for second consecutive month in Cyprus

Deflation was recorded for a second consecutive month in May 2013, according to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, indicating the effects on consumer habits of the recession and high unemployment in Cyprus, and the Eurogroup decision of March.

According to the Statistical Service, the rate of inflation for May 2013 continued in negative ground and dropped further to -0.7% compared to -0.3% in April 2013 and 2.9% in May 2012.

Negative inflation of -0.3% had also been recorded in April 2013.

[04] House President: Occupation intensifies environmental destruction

The continued Turkish occupation of Cyprus intensifies environmental destruction, President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has said.

Addressing the plenary of the House on the occasion of World Environment Day, on Thursday, Omirou noted that the Turkish army which has been occupying Cyprus' northern third since 1974 when Turkey invaded the island does not respect Greek Cypriot property or the Greek Cypriot cultural and religious heritage and has proceeded with uncontrolled quarrying, unregulated growth and the destruction of archeological and religious monuments.

"It is our duty, both collectively and as individuals to realize that the world's future is directly linked with environmental protection and with the biosphere's future", he said.

[05] Justice Minister: Implementation of fundamental rights important

Minister of Justice and Public Order Ionas Nicolaou has highlighted the importance of the implementation of fundamental rights by EU member states.

Nicolaou was addressing an EU Council of Justice and Home Affairs, on Thursday, in Luxemburg.

The Council was discussing among other issues an EU Commission Report on the implementation of the Charter of Fundamental Rights.
