  • [01] Communications Minister: Huge prospects in energy sector Limassol

Minister of Communications and Works Tasos Mitsopoulos has said that up to five thousand new jobs would be created over the next three years in the energy sector, which provides huge prospects and possibilities for the Cypriot economy.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of EDT Offshore, whose facilities include a mud-plant, to be used for the appraisal wells in the Cyprus Block 12 A-1 field, Mitsopoulos said that it was necessary, in view of the new jobs, to train young people in occupations related to the energy sector.

He said the authorities were in contact with universities, the Shipping Chamber and private organisations in order to create the necessary education infrastructure in Cyprus to train young persons in energy-related occupations, so that Cyprus would not have to rely on an imported workforce.

[02] Cyprus and Greece to re-design their defense cooperation

Relations between Cyprus and Greece in the field of defense and security, as well as defense cooperation, were discussed during a meeting held Monday in Nicosia between Defense Minister Fotis Fotiou and Chief of the General Staff of National Defence of Greece, General Michalis Kostarakos.

In statements after the meeting, the Minister expressed Cyprus' gratitude to Greece for its long-lasting support, recalling that Cyprus is a country occupied by Turkish troops since 1974.

"The Cyprus problem is a problem of invasion and occupation by Turkey. In our struggle for justice for all citizens of Cyprus, Greece remains a stable and unconditional supporter of the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus", Fotiou said.

[03] Cyprus third in the 15th GSSE

Cyprus clinched third place in the list of medals of the 15th Games of Small States of Europe, which wrapped up in Luxemburg.

Cyprus entered the Games` last day hoping to garner enough medals to beat Iceland in the second place in the medal list, while host country, Luxemburg had already secured top place.

The Cypriot athletes won eight gold out of 13 in the track and field disciplines and four out of six in group sports. However the second place was lost in ping pong, tennis and beach volley, where Cyprus could not secure gold laurels.
