[01] House of Representatives commemorates first Cyprus President
Today's crucial financial and political context calls for adherence to the
goals and principles Cyprus has set, without relinquishing its fundamental
national objectives, House President Yiannakis Omirou has said, noting
that this has been the message of the late Archbishop Makarios III.
Addressing a commemorative event on Sunday to mark 100 years since the
birth of Archbishop Makarios, who served as the first President of the
Republic of Cyprus, Omirou said that the Greek Cypriot side is under
pressure, while Turkey appears in the international arena to be keen
for a Cyprus solution, when Ankara is in reality the intransigent party.
He rejected the attempt to link the country's present economic condition
with a Cyprus solution and the exploitation of its hydrocarbon resources
and added that statements to that effect are unacceptable.
