  • [01] House President sends a message of honour to the Pontian Greeks of Cyprus

    Cyprus House President Yiannakis Omirou has sent a message of honour to the Pontian Greeks who found a home in Cyprus and smoothly incorporated to the Cypriot society. In statements on the sidelines of the annual memorial ceremony held in Paphos, Omirou said that May 19th has been established by the Hellenic Parliament and the Cyprus House of Representative as a day of remembrance and honour for the Genocide of the Pontian Hellenism by the Turks.

    Omirou said that the target of the Day of remembrance is to send the message to the international and the European community that they should intensify their pressure towards Turkey to recognize the Armenian and the Pontian Greek Genocides and to abandon their expansive policies in Cyprus.

    [02] Economic Policy Council studies banking sector

    The Economic Policy Council will convene May 31 to study the research carried out by a special group of the Council on the banking system of Cyprus. President of the Council, Nobel laureate Christoforos Pissarides said on Saturday that when the Council members conclude the study on the research they would send it to the President of the Republic and the Minister of Finance and later on it will be given to party leaders.

    The Council, Pissarides said, will prepare a number of researches and studies on various sectors of the economy aiming to come to conclusions as to which financial model they could recommend Cyprus to adopt. The studies are being carried out be the groups the Council has established.

    [03] Cyprus' GSP Stadium qualifies for hosting football games of all UEFA competitions

    GSP Stadium in Nicosia is the only stadium in Cyprus that fully complies with requirements for hosting football games of all the UEFA competitions. According to Cyprus Football Association official website, GSP Stadium is classified in Category 4, which means that it can be used for games of all the UEFA competitions.

    Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca is classified in Category 3 and it can be used for football matches until Europa League play offs. Finally, Tsirio Stadium in Limassol and GSZ Stadium in Larnaca, according to the evaluation Committee, are classified in Category 2, which means that both can host daytime games up to the 2nd qualifying round of Champions League and Europa League.
