  • [01] Health Minister to attend 66th World Health Assembly

    Health Minister Petros Petrides, heading a delegation, will participate in the 66th World Health Assembly that will take place in Geneva May 20-28.

    Some of the issues on this year's agenda are the prevention and control of Non Contagious Diseases, children's health and the promotion of mental health, as well as the reform of the World Health Organization (WHO).

    He will leave for Geneva on May 19 and return to Cyprus on May 22.

    [02] Pafos proclaimed European Capital of Culture for 2017

    Pafos was proclaimed on Friday the 2017 Cultural Capital of Europe, during a ceremony at the Council of the European Union, in Brussels. Present during the ceremony were Cyprus Education Minister Kyriacos Kenevezos and Pafos Mayor Savvas Vergas.

    The Minister said during his address that the day is historic, since it is the first time a city in Cyprus undertakes the important task to represent Europe's Cultural Capital.

    The city's Mayor said that Pafos can build a new cultural face for itself, based on the "Open-air Factory" concept, aiming to build bridges of understanding between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, as well as cultural cooperation between Europe and the Middle East.

    [03] Russian navy warships dock at Limassol port

    Three Russian navy warships, which are part of a flotilla sailing in the Mediterranean Sea, docked on Friday morning at the new port of Limassol, on the south coast of Cyprus, for refueling purposes.

    The ships include the destroyer "Admiral Panteleyev," the salvage/rescue tug Fotiy Krylov and the tanker Pechenga.

    The three ships are expected to set sail from the Limassol around noon next Monday after being refueled.

    [04] 16th International Tourism Exhibition opens

    The 16th International Tourism Exhibition TAXIDI 2013 opened īn Friday with the participation of tour operators, airline companies, national and local tourist organizations, district offices from Cyprus and Greece, Cyprus and international hotels, foreign countries and other travel and holiday related parties.

    The exhibition, organized every year by the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents (ACTA) in cooperation with Display Art Plc, was inaugurated by Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis who said in his address that current developments concerning Cyprus' economy have naturally affected many people, who are now more reserved and cautious as regards their vacation.

    He called on the people to look into the choices they have for domestic tourism, either as an option that may complement their vacation abroad, or as their main option, since Cyprus offers a great tourist experience, as he noted.
