[01] President Anastasiades' letter to Draghi to be made publicIndependent institutions enjoy the government's respect, President Anastasiades said on Sunday, noting at the same time that people's sovereignty must also be respected by independent officials, who are appointed on the basis of the mandate given by the people.Invited to comment on a statement by Central Bank Governor Demetriades to a local daily newspaper, that he seeks the government's cooperation and not manipulation, Anastasiades wished that the Central Bank Governor would "work towards this direction and not continue to act in a way by which he has many times taken the government by surprise, but in a way that will restore the stability of the banking system." Asked about Demetriades' statement that he enjoys the appreciation of the European Central Bank (ECB), Anastasiades said that ECB President Mario Draghi will be informed about some events "which, I hope, will raise consciousness that we would not be in the situation we are today if the appropriate supervision was exercised by European institutions." Anastasiades noted that his letter to Draghi will be made public as Draghi's letter to him was also made public. Draghi has written to both Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Omirou warning against dismissing the Central Bank Governor.
