  • [01] Austerity alone is not enough, speakers at ILO meeting say

    Austerity measures alone are not enough to tackle the financial crisis in some European countries, but should be followed by measures targeting growth, speakers at the 9th European Regional Meeting of the International Labour Organization in Oslo have said.

    The meeting, which is held every four years, is also attended by the Cyprus government and the social partners.

    According to an official announcement, the ILO meeting focuses on growth and job creation, as well as on the promotion of social dialogue as a means to reaching acceptable policies to constrain youth unemployment.

    [02] Rate of inflation drops to 1.3% in March 2013

    The rate of inflation for March 2013 decreased to 1.3% compared to 1.8% in February 2013 and 3.5% in March 2012.

    According to the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus, the highest rate of inflation (8.7%) was marked in the category alcoholic beverages and tobacco. On the other hand, Health, clothing and footwear and restaurants and hotels marked in March negative rate of inflation.

    The highest decrease in the rate of inflation (11.2%) was recorded in the category housing, water, electricity and gas (from 12.2% in March 2012 to 1% in March 2013).

    [03] Cyprus' trade deficit falls in Jan-Feb 2013

    Trade deficit decreased by 100 mln euros during the first two months of 2013, standing at 577.97 mln, from 677.92 mln during the same period last year, the Statistical Service announced on Tuesday.

    This is a result of a decrease by 80 mln in imports (799.71 mln) and an increase of 22 mln in exports (221.74 mln) in January and February.

    Moreover, according to preliminary estimates for Foreign Trade of Cyprus in February 2013, total imports/arrivals were 391,6 mln, of which 273,9 mln were arrivals from other EU member states and 117,7 mln imports from Third Countries.
