Cyprus residents` trips abroad recorded a significant decrease of 22.4% in January 2013, compared with the corresponding month of 2012, according to a press release issued today by the Statistical Service (CyStat).

On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, 61.933 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad in January 2013 compared to 79.777 in the corresponding month last year.

In January 2013 there was a decrease of 2.6% in the trips of residents to Greece (from 20.558 in January 2012 to 20.019 in January 2013) as well as 0.8% increase from the United Kingdom (from 22.858 in 2012 to 23.030 this year).

[02] Inflation in Cyprus drops to 1.1% in March 2013

The rate of inflation in March 2013 fell to 1.1% compared to 1.6% in February 2013 and 3.4% in March 2012, according to data released by Cyprus Statistical Service on Thursday.

For the period January-March 2013, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded an increase of 1.5% compared to the corresponding period of 2012.

On a monthly basis, the CPI for March 2013 increased by 0.82 units or 0.69% to 120,27 units compared to 119,45 in February 2013. This is mainly due to increases in the prices of certain clothing and footwear items and certain fresh vegetables and fruit.

[03] Investigative commission hearings will be public

An investigative commission, appointed to look into possible political, civil or criminal responsibilities in the banking sector and the economy, has announced that its hearings will be public.

An official press release says the commission, which started work today, will be based at the Filoxenia conference centre, in Nicosia.

Hearings for the purpose of obtaining evidence will be public unless the commission decides otherwise for specific reasons, the press release says, inviting at the same time anybody who has evidence or information on the matters pertaining to its competences in the context of its mandate to notify the commission.
