  • [01] Elections campaign ends

Election campaign ends Friday midnight, as everything is ready for the presidential elections to be held on February 17.

Presidential candidates are Nicos Anastasiades, Stavros Malas, Giorgos Lillikas, Praxoulla Antoniadou Kyriakou, Georgios Charalambous, Lakis Ioannou, Makaria Andri Stylianou, Loucas Stavrou, Solon Gregoriou, Andreas Efstratiou and Costas Kyriakou (Outopos).

If no candidate obtains 50,00% of the vote from the first round, a second round will be held on 24 February.

[02] First holding facility for illegal immigrants opens in Cyprus

The first immigration detention centre where illegal immigrants will be detained until they are deported to their countries, opened Friday in Menogia, in the Larnaka district.

"By building immigration detention facilities Cyprus fully complies with its obligations deriving from international conventions and EU Directives", Minister of Justice and Public Order Loucas Louca has said.

The Minister expressed hope that the operation of the immigration detention centre will alleviate the problem of detaining illegal immigrants in prisons.

[03] Cyprus trade deficit down, Eurostat says

Cyprus' trade deficit decreased by €500 million on an annual basis during the first 11 months of 2012, reaching a total of €4 billion, Eurostat data released on Friday show.

Total exports reached €1.3 billion, marking an increase of 5% in relation to the same period of the previous year.

Total imports on the other hand were reduced by 8% reaching a total of €5.3 billion.

[04] Archbishop stresses "we will claim our inalienable historical rights"

Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II has stressed that the people of Cyprus, led by the Church of Cyprus and their new political leadership will claim their inalienable historical rights.

Commenting on a Financial Times article which said that the Cyprus economic crisis `can serve as leverage for the solution of the Cyprus dispute`, Archbishop of Cyprus said that the referece causes indignation and outrage among the Cypriot people.

The head of the Church of Cyprus in a written statement assures the Financial Times columnist that "there is no chance for a Greek hand to sign a two-state solution as Erdogan and Davutoglu dream of".
