[01] President awards Slovak Ambassador the Grand Cross of the Order
of Merit
President Demetris Christofias awarded Wednesday Ambassador of Slovakia
in Nicosia, Anna Turenicova, the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of
the Republic of Cyprus.
The award ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace, in the presence
of members of the Council of Ministers, heads of diplomatic missions
in Cyprus, representatives of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot
political parties and UNFICYP officials. In his speech, President
Christofias referred to the friendly relations with Slovakia, saying
that the Czechoslovak Ambassador to Cyprus the late Emil Kemplousek had
offered to mediate for a meeting to take place between the Greek Cypriot
and Turkish Cypriot political leaders.
That historic meeting took place in Prague, in May 1989 and was the
beginning of a series of bilateral meetings between the political parties
of both communities in Cyprus, which still take place at the Ledra Palace
Hotel, in the UN buffer zone in Nicosia.
