  • [01] Hollande/Schulz ready for compromise on MFF

French President Francois Hollande and European Parliament President Martin Schultz expressed on Tuesday their readiness to reach a compromise on the Multiannual Financial Framework, to be discussed at European Council level at the end of the week.

Speaking during a joint press conference, after Hollande's first appearance before the European Parliament plenary, Schultz said that the European Parliament is ready for a compromise, noting at the same time that the institution would not accept a compromise at any cost.

To this extent he recalled that one euro spent as part of the EU budget means that 3 euro is spent by the private sector.

[02] Cyprus wins five gold medals at Special Olympics

Cyprus athletes have won five gold medals, five silver and seven bronze during the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2013, which took place in Korea.

According to an announcement by Special Olympics Cyprus, the games concluded successfully.

On Tuesday, the last day of the games, Cyprus cross country athletes Maria Kyriacou finished first in slalom, Timotheos Vassiliou came second, while Christakis Agathocleous finished in the 7th position.

    [03] Unemployment shows increase

An increase of almost 24% was recorded in the number of registered unemployed in January 2013 compared to January 2012.

According to the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus, the unemployed persons, registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of January 2013, reached 45.933 persons.

Based on the seasonally adjusted data that shows the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for January 2013 increased to 40.496 persons in comparison to 40.074 in the previous month

[04] Commission recalls its decisions about the BoC

The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission has recalled its findings regarding two inquiries in relation to the Bank of Cyprus, following a Court ruling.

CNA has learnt that the Court decision came after an appeal by the Bank of Cyprus' legal advisor, who stated that the inquiries of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission began before the official publication of the appointment of one of the members of the Commission's board, thus any decisions taken by the Commission are invalid.

One of the Commission`s inquiries, which began in July, concerns the decision of the Bank of Cyprus to seek state support of 500 million euro, instead of 200 million as it had initially announced. The second inquiry concerns the conditions under which the Bank of Cyprus bought Greek government bonds and whether the Bank had made the necessary announcements to the investors.
