EU Presidency [01] Mavroyiannis: People went beyond the call of duty for a successful EU PresidencyDeputy Minister to the President for European Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis, in an assessment of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which ended in December last year, is full of praise for the people who worked to make it a success. "They went beyond the call of duty, to serve their country and the EU. I am proud of them," he told CNA in an interview, on the expiration of his posting on January 31st, 2013.The EU Presidency, he pointed out, was nothing more than underscoring one's competencies and responsibilities as these emanate from EU membership. He also said that Nicosia, throughout its six month rotating presidency which ended on 31st December last year, never raised the Cyprus problem at its own initiative, but it certainly responded to remarks relating to the division and the continuing occupation by Turkey of its northern part, since 1974. On the involvement of Turkish Cypriots in the EU Presidency, he said the Presidency worked very hard to involve the Turkish Cypriots on an equal par with the Greek Cypriots, recalling that Turkish Cypriot non governmental organizations have participated in meetings to help draft the Presidency programme and all Ministries have employed Turkish Cypriots.
