  • [01] Commissioner Vassiliou discusses money laundering allegations with President

European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou said allegations against Cyprus for money laundering are a result of various interests. The Commissioner had a meeting on Monday with President Demetris Christofias at the Presidential Palace, during which they reviewed Cyprus request for financial support and the obstacles that arise.

"We agreed that charges against Cyprus for money laundering are a result of different interests" she said, adding that indeed Cyprus has mechanisms to prevent money laundering. The Commissioner expressed the view that the Finance Minister's decision to launch a campaign to inform European Parliaments and officials on the issue goes in the right direction.

She gave assurances that both the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and Vice President Olli Rehn "have no doubts that Cyprus has demonstrated its willingness to do whatever is needed to save its economy and I believe that on the part of the EU there is good intention to help"'.

The US support all efforts for a political settlement in Cyprus, US Ambassador in Nicosia John Koenig has said. On our part, he noted, "we will support all efforts for a solution of the Cyprus issue".
