  • [01] Spokesman: Everyone`s duty to defend the name of Cyprus

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said on Tuesday that defending the name of Cyprus and the country`s interests was everyone`s duty, adding that the government would continue the fight against the privatisation of semi-governmental organisations, even if it is considered by Europe as part of the structural reforms of the economy.

"It is obvious that certain persons covet the Russian deposits in Cyprus and possible the natural gas," he said and assured that "these are things that we will defend."

Stephanou said Cyprus was under attack regarding alleged money laundering in the country, noting that "there have been evaluations by committees and organisations of the Council of Europe and internationally and no such thing has been found," and wondered why Cyprus was being accused of money laundering or being a tax haven.

[02] Agriculture Minister says Cyprus EU Presidency addressed climate change

The successful conclusion of negotiations, first among EU member states and then with the European Parliament, for new legislation that improves European policy in combating climate change, is considered to be very important by the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment.

Addressing a press conference on the work of the Ministry of Agriculture during the EU Presidency, Minister of Agriculture Sophocles Aletraris said the Ministry was called upon to handle a wide range of issues, including agriculture, fisheries and the environment.

He noted that, during these six months, the Ministry of Agriculture presided over six Agriculture and Fisheries Councils, three Environment Councils, sixteen high level meetings in Cyprus, fifteen meetings of the Special Committee on Agriculture, and about 150 meetings of workgroups in Brussels.

[03] Galanos: We should denounce the IPC in the occupied areas

A broad meeting to be held after the presidential elections will examine the possibility of filing an interstate application to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) by Cyprus, denouncing the so-called "immovable property commission" (IPC) in the Turkish occupied areas of the island, President of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities and Mayor of Famagusta Alexis Galanos has said.

Speaking at a press conference during which the new publication of the Commission of the occupied municipalities entitled "Occupied towns - Displaced Municipalities of the Republic of Cyprus" was presented, Galanos referred to the actions taken by the Commission regarding the sale of Greek Cypriot properties in the Turkish -occupied areas through the so-called IPC.

"It is time for the State to seriously deal with this issue and denounce the so-called domestic remedy which, in fact, violates its terms of reference and abuses its power", he added.
