  • [01] Peace process at a deadlock due to Turkish intransigence, says Minister

The process of resolving the Cyprus problem has come to a deadlock due to Turkish intransigence which allows no optimism, Defence Minister Dimitris Eliades has said. He also said that the good will and the political will of the Greek Cypriot side is not enough to reach a fair and viable compromise solution.

The Minister, speaking on Saturday at a special ceremony, said that the Cyprus problem remains unresolved with the dividing line still splitting the country in two, the illegal settlers from Turkey multiplying in the northern Turkish occupied areas, the destruction of the cultural heritage continuing and the presence Turkish troops being a constant threat to the future of people of Cyprus.

"We are seeking and are working for a solution, but we will not succumb to the terms of the conqueror, under any circumstances, putting at risk the survival of the Greek Cypriots in the land of their fathers, " he said. He added that Cyprus may be facing economic and social problems but it cannot forget the most important problem, that of securing the survival of the nation, and freeing the country of Turkish troops.
