[01] FM urges Turkey to abandon gunboat diplomacyAnkara has to realize that gunboat diplomacy, with the display of military power and direct threats of warfare, has no place in the European Union, said Tuesday Minister of Foreign Affairs, Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis.In a speech on "Cultural Diplomacy: Foreign Policy and Intercultural Dialogue Tool" at the Inaugural Conference of the Cyprus Center for Intercultural Studies in Nicosia, Marcoullis also said that she strongly feels that more should be done in the direction of cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in the area of culture and the arts. In her speech, Marcoullis said Cyprus' ten thousand years of history is a case in point of merging civilizations and inter-culturalism. Due to its strategic geographic position, located between three continents in a volatile region, Cyprus applies a cautious foreign policy based on the principles of peace and mutual understanding, she noted. [02] Contract on biodiversity conservation in Troodos National Park signedA contract was signed Tuesday between the Planning Bureau and the Department of Forests, for the financing of the project "Biodiversity Conservation in Restoration and Management of the Amiantos Asbestos Mine in Troodos National Forest Park", which will be implemented under the EEA Grants 2009-2014.According to an official press release issued here today, the Project will be implemented by the Department of Forests of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, and the Program under which the Project falls will be operated by the Planning Bureau. The total budget of the Project is €1.350.000. The EEA Grants will provide 84,3% of the total project budget, which amounts to €1.138.167, while the Republic of Cyprus will provide 15,7% of the total project budget, which amounts to €211.833. [03] Trade deficit shrinks in first 10 months of 2012Cyprus` trade deficit decreased during the first ten months of 2012, according to data released Tuesday by Eurostat.The deficit was reduced by 400 million euro, compared to the corresponding period of 2011. According to the same data, Cyprus` total value of exports for January-October 2012 stood at 1.2 billion euro, recording an increase of 6% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
