[01] President Christofias: 2012 best year for Cyprus sports
President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has described
2012 as the most successful sports year of all times in the island's
history. Addressing the Cyprus Sports Writers Union 2012 prize award
ceremony for best Cypriot athletes, President Christofias said "our
small country has left its mark on the Olympics and Paraolympic Games
of London and we warmly congratulate our athletes, coaches and everyone
who participated in this achievement".
President Christofias also made special reference to APOEL football club,
noting "its achievement to compete in the eight best teams of Europe in
the Champions League is great and an historic moment" for Cyprus. He
praised 22 year old Pavlos Kontides, who won a silver medal in Men's
Laser in 2012 Olympic Games, as well as Andreas Moyskallis for being
proclaimed a Fairplay Ambassador for 2013 and Roula Katsambi for her
excellent career in the island's sports history and being honored for
her contribution. Karolina Pelendritou also won the silver medal in
women's 100m breaststroke SB12, in the London Paralympic Games 2012.
"These successes are a collateral for greater achievements in the
future", said President Christofias, adding that "the glory belongs to
all our athletes and we are sure that they will raise Cyprus higher in
the sports' pedestal". "The role of the state in the island's sports
life is integral and multidimensional. We want sports to promote our
country and at the same time we want athletes with morals and values",
he remarked. Christofias assured that the government, through programmes
of the Cyprus Sports Organisation and despite the financial crisis, will
provide all guarantees for the development, prevalence and distinction
of Cyprus sports.
