[01] Dam capacity in Cyprus declines to 55%, says Agriculture Minister
The situation concerning Cyprus water reserves is borderline as dam
capacity declined to 55%, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources
and the Environment Andreas Kouyialis has said.
"We are in a borderline situation with regard to dam capacity," Kouyialis
said Saturday, noting that if the drought continues "there will be a
problem concerning water provided for irrigation purposes." He pointed
out that farmers that are supplied via the southern pipeline will face
problems and especially the farmers of the Famagusta area.
"We must find a solution because they should be water available for
our farmers if we want to develop agriculture in Cyprus," Kouyialis
added. Responding to a question whether water cuts for irrigation
purposes will be implemented, Kouyiallis said Cyprus Water Development
Department is examining this possibility. "If the water level in the
dams declines further, then there will be a small possibility for water
cuts," he said.
