A scientific symposium on relations between Cyprus and Russia was held in Nicosia, during which Minister of Communications and Works Tasos Mitsopoulos referred to the great importance the Republic of Cyprus attributes to the further expansion of relations between Cyprus and Russia, and assured efforts would continue to strengthen the relationship.

The symposium, the first of its kind, was organised by the Cyprus-Russian Business Association and the Cyprus-Russian Friendship Group, with a specific agenda, which aimed at highlighting the relations of the two countries through the centuries, and scientifically studying cultural effects and the contribution of Russia to Cyprus` historical progression.

Speakers from Cyprus and Greece referred to relevant aspects in archaeology, post-Byzantine art, church relations, and contemporary art, sketching the context in which contacts with Russia were carried out.

[03] Galanos and Kayal say Famagusta should be returned

The town of Varosha should be returned to its legal citizens within the right framework, Mayor of Turkish occupied Famagusta Alexis Galanos and Turkish Cypriot so-called mayor of Famagusta Oktay Kayal have said.

[04] Government to change social welfare policy, Labour Minister says

"The state has failed to a large extent on social welfare issues", Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Zeta Emilianidou has admitted, noting that the government has therefore decided to change completely the social welfare policy.

Addressing the General Assembly of the Cyprus Confederation of Organisations of the Disabled (CCOD), Emilianidou said that that it is primarily a state's obligation the support of persons with disabilities, in order to remain active in the society.

As she said, although a gradual progress on issues and problems related to the disabled persons has been achieved in the previous years, there are much to be done in order to remove obstacles and facilitate those people in areas such as employment, accessibility, education, and culture. The Minister stated that since 2006 a consultation on several issues, between the Government and the Cyprus Confederation of Organisations of the Disabled as a social partner, is mandatory.
