Cypriot community against women [01] Cyprus organizes the 24th Energy Charter ConferenceCyprus will organize the 24th Energy Charter Conference, on December 5-6, in Nicosia.The Conference is organized by the Cyprus Ministry of Energy and the Secretariat of the Charter and is titled "15 years (1998-2013) of promotion and protection of investments in energy under the Treaty for the Energy Charter". According to an official announcement, the conference is considered an event of paramount importance for Cyprus and an important opportunity fro Nicosia to strengthen its energy relations. [02] Commission approves 31 mn financial assistance for the Turkish Cypriot communityA new 31 million euro financial assistance programme for the Turkish Cypriot community was approved by the European Commission, said a press release issued on Friday."This renewed funding is the continuation of a successful EU funded programme which focuses on promoting the economic integration of the island and improving contacts between the two communities and the EU with the overall objective of facilitating reunification," the European Commission noted. This year`s funding, it said, "will focus on ensuring the sustainability of previous interventions giving emphasis to preparing for EU standards, especially in the areas of wastewater and animal and plant health. [03] Cyprus considers signing CoE Convention on combating violence against womenThe Republic of Cyprus is seriously considering becoming a signatory of the Council of Europe's Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, Minister of Justice and Public Order Ionas Nicolaou has said.Nicolaou, who was addressing an event on Friday in Nicosia on violence in the family, said the government aims to speed up penal processes so that justice may be served more quickly and effectively. The Republic of Cyprus, Nicolaou pointed out, "is seriously considering becoming a signatory in the Convention, which covers the three aspects, prevention, combating and protection regarding all forms of violence against women".
