  • [01] Agriculture Minister to attend Ajaccio Ministerial Conference for Ocean Conservation

Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Ministers Nicos Kouyialis will attend the Ajaccio Ministerial Conference for Ocean Conservation.

Governments and major international institutions will meet in Ajaccio, Corsica, on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26 and 27, immediately after the week in Marseille that lies at the technical core of the Congress.

They will consider policy initiatives necessary to bring Aichi Target 11 within reach in 2020.

Three roundtables will bring together the most prominent organizations involved in ocean conservation, around governments represented at ministerial level.

[02] Common basis needed for resumption of talks, says House President

In order to resume the UN-led peace talks for a political settlement in Cyprus, a common negotiating basis is needed, House of Representatives President Yiannakis Omirou has said.

Addressing a memorial on Sunday for those fallen and missing during the 1974 Turkish invasion, which resulted in the occupation of the island's northern third, Omirou stressed that the practice of entering into talks for the sake of doing so should remain firmly in the past.

He said that Turkey's intransigent stance in the Cyprus issue over the past five years promote racial discrimination and violate every democratic principle and every international rule.
