  • [01] UNFICYP: No scheduled leaders' meeting on 4th of November

    The United Nations in Cyprus said Wednesday that there is no scheduled meeting yet between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, denying reports that they will meet on the 4th of November.

    The date was announced by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, who said that "it is scheduled that the leaders of the two communities will meet on the island on the 4th of November and to this end this month is a month of intensive preparation".

    Invited by CNA to comment on that information, Spokesman of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Michel Bonnardeaux, said that "there is no scheduled meeting for the 4th of November as we speak".

    [02] Qatari Ambassador: Cooperation prospects with Cyprus very good

    There are many prospects of cooperation between Cyprus and Qatar, mainly in the fields of energy, investment and tourism, new Ambassador of Qatar to Cyprus Hussein Ahmed Al - Homaid said during a meeting on Wednesday with Acting President of the Republic, House President Yiannakis Omirou.

    According to an official press release, Al - Homaid noted that there is great interest in the forthcoming visit of Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades to Doha, which will open new horizons in the relations between Cyprus and Qatar.

    He also underlined that his country supports the implementation of UN resolutions on Cyprus and is in favour of a just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem on the basis of a reunited federal state.

    [03] Cyprus GDP drops by 5,9% in 2Q 2013

    The GDP growth rate in real terms during the second quarter of 2013 is negative and estimated at -5,9% over the corresponding quarter of 2012, announced Wednesday the Statistical Service of Cyprus.

    Based on seasonally and working day adjusted data, GDP growth rate in real terms is estimated at -5,8%.

    Ķegative growth rates were recorded by the secondary sector of the economy (Construction, Manufacturing), as well as in the sectors of Tourism, Banking, Trade, Transport and other Services.

    [04] Cabinet to examine 2014 state budget on Thursday

    The 2014 state budget will be on the agenda of the Cabinet's meeting on Thursday. According to reliable sources, the Cabinet will examine the budget and provided there are no changes it will be tabled directly to the House of Representatives.

    If changes are necessary, the budget will be send the budget to Parliament next week. The same sources have told CNA that there is continuous consultation between the Government and the Troika on the budget, with Cyprus' lenders focusing on the macroeconomic scenario.

    Troika's final comments on next year's state budget are expected during its next visit to the island beginning October 28th, for the second evaluation of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding agreed between Cyprus and the Troika.
