  • [01] Eurogroup decisions on Cyprus may be a test for future, says French MP

    Eurogroup decisions on Cyprus may be a test for future decisions on similar cases, French MP and President of the Franco - Cypriot Friendship Group in the French National Assembly Alain Bocquet has said. Bocquet was speaking during a meeting a representation of the Friendship Group had with the President and members of the Parliamentary Committee on Financial and Budgetary Affairs, on Wednesday, an official press release says.

    In particular, he referred to the Eurogroup decisions on Cyprus "stressing that possibly they constitute a test for future decisions on similar cases". At the same time he expressed his country's longstanding support and solidarity vis-à-vis Cyprus and its people as regards both the current economic situation and the continued struggle for finding a solution to the Cyprus issue.

    On his part President of the Parliamentary Committee on Financial and Budgetary Affairs Nicolas Papadopoulos briefed the French MPs on the current economic situation Cyprus finds itself in and on the ongoing efforts to deal with fiscal and financial sector problems .

    [02] PFIABCI-International World President to visit Cyprus

    FIABCI-International World President Flavio Gonzaga Nunes will pay a three day visit to Cyprus October 5-7, at the invitation of the President of FIABCI Cyprus Lakis Tofarides.

    According to a press release issued by FIABCI Cyprus, Nunes' visit to Cyprus "is very important because it probes that the country's real estate market continues, despite the problems of the Cyprus economy, to draw the interest of the most important international organizations of this sector and investors from all over the world."

    He also said it is important because it takes place in the framework of efforts by FIABCI Cyprus to widen its presence in the Middle East, adding that Cyprus' role will be determinative in this respect.

    During his visit, FIABCI International President will have contacts with state officials, organized real estate agencies and universities, which are academic members of FIABCI Cyprus. He will also attend a special meeting of the FIABCI Cyprus Board of Directors during which he will be informed and exchange views about Cyprus real estate market and its prospects.

    [03] House Committee Chairman meets UK parliamentarians

    The Cyprus problem, the situation of the Cypriot economy and the issue of the drilling and exploitation of hydrocarbons in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) were discussed during a meeting of the House Foreign and European Affairs Chairman Averof Neophytou with a delegation of the UK "Friends of Cyprus" committee, which is paying a three-day visit to Cyprus.

    The delegation comprises co-chairpersons of the Committee, members of the House of Commons Andy Love and Nick De Bois, and is accompanied by the committee's coordinator Mary Southcott.

    According to an official press release, Neophytou and the UK parliamentarians discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, in view of Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades' meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon and his meetings with US, Russian and Chinese high-ranking officials, in the framework of the 28th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Neophytou also informed them about the proposal of the Turkish government for the return of the fenced off town of Famagusta, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974, to its legal inhabitants, under UN surveillance, as a step towards creating a new momentum for a Cyprus settlement.

    He noted the will of the Republic of Cyprus to find a just and viable settlement and reiterated that the key to achieve this goal is still in the hands of Turkey.
