[01] Cyprus President meets Chinese Foreign Minister
Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades met Thursday with Chinese Minister
of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi in New York on the sidelines of the 68th UN
General Assembly.
During the meeting, Anastasiades and Wang reviewed the bilateral relations
emphasizing on issues of economic cooperation and particularly issues
relating to Chinese investments in Cyprus, as well as possible Chinese
investments in the field of energy.
Furthermore, President Anastasiades briefed the Foreign Minister of China,
a UN Security Council permanent member-state, on the Cyprus problem
and outlined his proposal for Famagusta, a city fenced-off since the
1974 Turkish invasion, stressing its importance as it could provide new
momentum to a new effort to bring about a Cyprus settlement. The Cypriot
side reaffirmed its steadfast support to the territorial integrity and
sovereignty of China in the context of a "One China" policy and expressed
support to a strategic partnership between China and the European Union.
