Cyprus ranks 107th among 143 countries as regards women's representation
in national parliaments worldwide, according to data presented Friday at
an event organised by the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies and
the European Parliament Office in Cyprus and took place at the House of
the EU.
At the event the Deputy Head of the European Parliament Office in Cyprus
Alexandra Attalides, pointed out that the need for action to ensure equal
participation of women and men in political decision-making becomes even
more imperative, at the start of the official communication strategy of
the European Parliament for the 2014 European elections.
European Parliament MP Antigoni Papadopoulou said that in Cyprus there
is only one female Minister in the Cabinet, there is no female mayor,
whereas 10.7% of the MPs, 17.5% of the members of the municipal councils
and 20.8% of senior government officials are female.
