  • [01] Cyprus represented at the 59th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference

Cyprus is represented at the 59th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa, by a three-members delegation comprising MPs Pampos Papageorgiou, Georgios Tasou and Sophocles Phittis.

According to an official press release issued here, the official beginning of the Conference was declared by the President of South Africa Jacob Zuma, while Chairman of the South Africa National Council of Provinces Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu addressed the opening ceremony, in the presence of the General Secretaries of CPA as well as more than 600 participants from the parliaments of CPA members.

Papageorgiou has also been attending meetings of the Executive Committee of the Association as Regional Representative.

[02] British travel agents vouch for Cyprus's safety amid Syrian crisis

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has reassured British tourists over Cyprus's safety amid the international debate regarding a potential military action against Syria.

"Cyprus is a popular winter sun destination, offering guaranteed sunshine and golden beaches. It's business as usual in all the Cypriot resorts," said ABTA, echoing reassurances given by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Cyprus stating that "there may be an increased risk of demonstrations, linked to the possibility of military action in Syria." It advises UK nationals to keep up to date with developments, be vigilant and avoid any protests or demonstrations. ABTA clarifies that there are no travel restrictions in place.

[03] Event in Platres to promote tourism and entrepreneurship

A multifaceted event will be held in the village of Platres, located on the mountains, on September 14 and 15 to promote theme tourism, youth and environmental entrepreneurship, business cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt, and the development of resourcefulness and skills in the "green heart" of Cyprus.

The event includes a creative geo-tourism conference in cooperation with Mawared Foundation of Sustainable Development and the Commercial Department of the Egyptian Embassy to Cyprus, as well as an exhibition, in an effort to promote the cultural treasures of Platres and to honour those who first appreciated the beauty of the resort, namely the British and Egyptians.

[04] Commission announces call for proposals for Cyprus civil society

The European Commission has announced the commencement of the fourth call for proposals in the framework of funding for the "Cypriot civil society in action", amounting to 2.500,000 euro.

The support of the projects aims to reinforce the Cypriot civil society in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus for the development of a climate of dialogue, participation in the society and promotion of values, tolerance and peace. It also aims to promote reconciliation, dialogue, rapprochement and trust between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities.
